With the end of the Cold War, the victory of liberal democracy seemed final. This was not the case, Professor Timothy Snyder argues. Authoritarianism has returned to Russia, and since 2010 anti-democratic features have spread from east to west, backed by Russian warfare in Ukraine and cyberwar in Europe and the United States. The rise of populism, Britain's choice to leave the EU, and the election of Donald Trump as the US president were all Russian goals, but their achievement reveals the vulnerability of Western societies. On 27th of May, Professor Snyder comes to The House of Literature in Oslo to lecture on this and on the true nature of the threat to democracy and law.
Timothy Snyder is the Richard C. Levin Professor of History at Yale University and a Permanent Fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna. Some of Snyder’s latest books are "The Road to Unfreedom: Russia, Europe, America" (2018), "On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century" (2017), "Black Earth: The Holocaust as History and Warning" (2015) and "Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin" (2010).
